T1 Baskets-Coiling, Stitching & Cobbling
All levels welcome - with Leanne Bray
Course Description
Learn valuable techniques for forming and creating vessels using mixed textile media. This includes coiling onto a wooden base, cobbling with a variety of materials, and wrapping recycled cloth. Requires a little patience and a love of stitching, but suitable for all skill levels. Please note, students will need to purchase their own tools. About your Tutor: Leanne is a multidisciplined artist, who has worked full time for nearly 40 years as an art professional. Using her original strengths as a Graphic Designer and illustrator, she has drawn on the combination of strong technical background and sound conceptual development, combining it to create the flexibility, passion and professionalism that lends itself to a wide range of artistic adventures. About the Course The spirit of the maker lives long in the crafted vessels that have been produced since man first discovered the need for something to carry things in. This course is all about celebrating both the maker and the foundational craft of basketry, the art of the hand made and the long traditions of making functional and/or decorative vessels. Starting small, once you get the hang of the processes, you can carry on, to create a variety of sculptural and functional forms. Aside from the various skills and the differing methods of basket making (with a variety of unexpected materials) Leanne will share her years of working within the arts industry and first-hand experience of visiting and making in Africa and India. Suitable for all levels WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO BRING Please bring a basic stitching toolkit – ie scissors, tapestry (large) needles, pins etc. The tutor will supply the initial ‘pack’ of required materials - but after the first week you are welcome to bring related materials from home that will lend themselves to the various techniques. MATERIALS FEE Fee paid direct to tutor. The cost to each student for the initial set up materials will be $40 and will include cord, wooden base, cotton threads and some cloth.
